The official kick-off

The official kick-off

Today was finally the day: we officially kicked off Bike for Africa 2020. And we didn’t start slowly. Our first stage today was one of 65km and 1200 height meters. The starting point was at our sleeping spot in Ruhondo, so we could enjoy the view one last time. Luckily the stunning views didn’t stop there. We encountered many viewing points along the route, one even more prettier than the other one. And then we didn’t see our lunch spot yet…

It wasn’t just marvellous views we saw today. Our cycling route crossed different schools, where all children came out to the street to root for our bikers. The enthusiasm they spread, was simply unforgettable.

Around 13h, and after 40km, we reached our lunch spot. Or let’s say: the starting point towards the lunch spot. Because the place where we would eat, was situated on a mountain top, with a steep 1km trail leading towards it. It wasn’t easy after an already tough ride, but the view we encountered on top, was totally worth it.

While enjoying the view, we discovered that Rwanda can really have a microclimate. While half of the group suffered pouring rain in the first part of the stage, the other half didn’t feel more than a few raindrops…

The last 25km of the day led to the place where we stay for the next 2 nights: the Africa Rising Cycling Center. It’s the home of the Rwanda national cycling team, and it’s their mission to recruit and train local athletes to be able to compete with the rest of the world. Besides that, they also aim to make Rwanda a cycling tourism destination. We’re just here for a few days, but we can already fully confirm that it truly is a beautiful country to bike through.
